Pink Lilies

A little while ago, I noticed that our pink lilies were blooming out by the garden so I just had to have some pictures of them!!!! The best one I got was this one and it looked great on my camera.....

But when I got it on the computer, I was a little put out by how washed out it looked, so after about 15 minutes with Coral Paint Shop Pro, it now looks like this......

Cattle Egrets in the horse trap

Took these pictures the other day of a couple of Cattle Egrets in my horse trap. This is the 3rd year that we've had one come in, but this is the first year that there has been two come in!

And they had fun pestering the buffalo too.....

Until one of them pecked the buffalo on the head, then the buffalo ran them off!

Horsey Kisses and Grass Smoke

I guess this blog finds me out on my porch, watching 4 scruffy buffalo down by the driveway, a few tiny flames down by the creek that were left over from today's burn and my horses grazing peacefully out in the horse trap. A cool south-west wind is blowing my American flag and stirring up the smell of grass smoke as the first few stars start to appear in the dark blue sky and the whippoorwills and coyotes start to sing down along the creek.
Anyways, all of the above has nothing to do with the subject of this post!! Last night I went out in search of new horse pictures, new close up horse pictures! Blake was the first one to come to the fence, curious as to WHY I'm setting on the ground, whistling at him as if my very life depended on it!

"What......."

"Are......"

"You....."

"Doing?!?!"

"Hmmmmm, a camera, I like cameras!!!"

"Oh I just love to have my picture taken!!"

Now poor Blake don't have the prettiest head on him, but sometimes you can catch his good side! Key word, SOMETIMES!!!

A day out on the Prairie

A couple of days ago we went out in search of something to take pictures of. And boy did we find some!
First we saw a herd of buffalo, with lots and lots of babies....

On down the road we found lots of wild flowers....

And we found some big bull buffaloes coming up out of the creek bottom......

And a Plover that was running around out in the middle of the bulls....

Heading down the the creek....(yes, I took pictures of EVERYTHING!!)

We saw a Mountain Boomer by the road......

On down to the creek we went.....

And on the way home, we saw deer way off in the distance....

And even some wild turkeys....

It was a very, very fun day!!!

Wet N Wild!

All day today it has been raining, just a slow, steady April rain. This afternoon, the 150+ 2 year old buffalo that my dad has been taking care of all winter, came to to the southern end of their boundary which is right by my house!

Not having anything to take pictures of ALL DAY, I couldn't resist going out to take pictures! ;-) So, suiting up in a rain coat and a straw cowboy hat, I went out to brave the rain.
This is what I get to see almost every day!

Spring has sprung big time on the prairie!

Just look at how the trees are budding out.....

I don't have any idea what the trees are with the white flowers on them, but they're sure pretty!

And the Red Buds along the creek....

Well, we're getting closer!

7 Signs of Spring

Yesterday I went out and planted the first flowers of 2010.

Spring is really starting to show itself around here!

A Day in the woods

**This post ain't got any pictures, just a funny story!**
Yesterday, me, mama and my sister took Blazer and Sadie to the creek/woods. While Blazer loves to run, chase birds, try to figure out how he could catch one of those big buzzards that live in the bluff down in the creek bottom and wade in the creek , Sadie is just starting to figure out this country livin' stuff, you know, what things are good to eat like Buffalo poop, dead bugs, ham bones, all that good stuff. Something else that she hasn't learned to do is swim. While down at the creek, me and my sister spotted a old bone in the creek(Now remember, both of us are homeschooled and simple things like that excite us), well the bone is out 'bout 6 or 7 feet in the water, to far to reach and to far(and to cold) of me to wade out in there and get it. So what to do? Ah ha, I remember that there's one of those little 3 prong garden digging tools in the truck, now if there's a piece of rope..... and sure 'nuff, there's some rope, now all we have to do is tye the rope to the digging tool and sortta hook the bone, HA, the first cast, I hook it! Man, the boy scouts ain't got nothin' on me!! ;) Mean while, Sadie is chasing Blazer along the creek, well about the time I get that bone drug in, Sadie slides off into about 6 inches of water while trying to chase Blazer. So I throw the rope down and grab Sadie by the collar. Well the poor thing ain't having much luck breathing between the water and me dragging her out by her collar! But we got it done!!! She came out looking like a drowned car--er drowned dog I guess! While I was getting Sadie out of the creek, mama and sister got the bone out. Turns out, it was just an old deer bone. After all that we called it a day and headed for the house. With Sadie wrapped up in my sweat shirt, Blazer loaded up in the back, sister got real quite, which means that she was thinkin' hard on something. After a while, she spoke up and said "And you kept your cowgirl hat on the whole time!!"
Quit a day it was!
But in some ways it was just another day in the country!

Spring Burning with my new "Mascot"

Tuesday was the first day of the Spring Burns here on the Prairie.

But before they lit the first fire of 2010, we made a little trip to town to pick up this.....

What I dream about this time of year....

It's the dead of winter right now, 33 degrees, north wind whipping outside and patches of snow from last night's little storm. And right now all I want to see is the smallest blade of green grass, maybe a tiny bud on the elm tree by the front gate, just something that gives me the slightest hope that we haven't been moved to Alaska in the middle of the night. But, nothing, no green grass, no tiny bud on the elm tree, nothing at all! So, my only hope is to go through my pictures and find ones like this:

Middle of May I think it was, an evening thunder storm was rollin' across the prairie. Speaking of thunder storms,

June thunder heads, but ya know what really caught my eye? This...

See the T and the S? You get it don't ya? T S stands for Thunder Storm!

Spring means fires on the prairie--controlled fires that is.

And BIG smoke!

And after the fire, the bluestem starts to grow and in July and August, it can get up to 11 feet tall!

And yes, I'm even ready to see grasshoppers again!

This was George, we never figured out was kind of grasshopper George was, so he remains the Mystery Yellow Grasshopper named George! ;)

And with the coming of Spring, comes Ol' Tom out strutting around looking for a girlfriend....he was none too successful on this go-round!

And in Spring these little critters start popping up every where...

Come May or June, the Whippoorwills come back and sing their song up and down the creek...

Once it get's good and hot, Spiderman loves his summer baths

Can't you just see his joy? He loves it!!

Oh, and one more picture that is Summer out and out,

So there, I'm done reminiscing about those beautiful, warm, sunshiney(sorry, I'm making up words!!) days as my fishing pole stands by my tackle box in the barn, my favorite pair of flip-flops lay in the floor of my closet as I set and dream about warm summer days! Oh boy, am I getting dramatic!!hahaha

Okay so it's been a few days since I've put up a blog---or weeks, okay it's been a month! But I have been taking lots and lots of pictures!!
My dad has 100+ 2 year old buffalo that he's taking care of through the winter months by our house, so I've been going with him to take pictures. After the snow we had Thursday night, me and dad went out to put out hay and feed them.

And then the ones that like to stay by the house.....

My White Christmas

For the first time in 7 years, we had a White Christmas. And not just a little bit of one ether!
It started out as rain and sleet but turned to all snow.
Here's what it looked like at 2:00PM

The water tank for my horses was just about covered by this drift...

The buffalo were hungry after the storm

A Lone Oak

I've always thought that this was one of the neatest old trees out here. It sets on the side of a rocky hill out in the wide open prairie. The pictures don't really do it justice, it looks so much more majestic when
you are standing right under it! Just goes to show that God can plant a tree out in the wide open and it can live for a long time!

New Buck

Yesterday evening this buck came in with 4 does. He is a 10 point with 2 kickers coming off his G2's. It looks like he has been in a fight with another buck and from the looks of the left side of his face, I think he came out on the bad end of the fight! Here's some pictures I took of him, in the last picture, he was bedded down by our drive way.

Buffalo Morning

Yesterday morning, I went with dad to feed the buffalo and try to sook them into a trap by the pens. The buffalo working is going to start Wednesday, so the sooner the buffalo are moved into the trap, the better. Most of the buffalo will come running when they hear the siren and see the feed truck.

Clearing our Hunting Road......

Sunday, Dad took me and my little sister to the woods to clear a road that we use when we are hunting.
It had been a couple of years ago when it was last cleared, so it was pretty grown up!
The trees had blocked most of the road, so it was not real easy to get down through it.

Now we're just waiting on this weekend, first doe hunt of the year!

Then it's deer meat on the smoker!!!! Yuuuuummmmmy!

The blind is going up tomorrow and we'll probably go shoot my gun this evening........

It's Rainin', it's Pourin'

Last night, we had a round of rain come through, so this morning I tucked my jeans into my boots, hunted for 20 minutes for my rain coat and then remembered that it was in the Blazer that was parked out under the barn.

Finally I found my OSU umbrella and outside into the rain I went.

This was what I saw:

Carport was flooded because of this:

Around to the porch I went,

Old Glory was a little damp, but she's still wavin'!

Mick came out of the dog box..

But Blazer didn't...

The horses don't care in less I'm carrying a coffee can of feed...

Food, did somebody say FOOD??

Yeah, got your attention that time, huh?

The rain flooded the horse trap, too,

and I had a pond under my porch..

From the look of these clouds and the sound of thunder, I bet we'll have more than 2 inches before the day is over.

Oh well, rainy days are good for Blogging, I think I set a new world record, 2 blogs in one day!

*Update* 1:45PM. 1 1/2 inches of rain since 12:30PM

Evening in the Deer Blind

This is a Country Girl's idea for fun. Last Saturday, we went to a Garage Sale and found this Ameristep deer hunting blind for $25.00. Buy of the day, don't ya think? I even have my very own guard dog!

And since we feed the deer right outside our yard fence, I decided to set it up and see if I could get some pictures.

And of course, my little sister, Jennie, had to come out with me. So, here we go with 2 iPods, 2 extra jackets and her Care-Bear blanket. After about 20 minutes, she's starting to get bored, so she brakes out the iPod with her Hannah Montana movie on it. Not long after Jennie get's good and comfy, here comes the deer.

Meet Ethel, Lucy and little Ricky! ;)

(We have to name all of our deer!)

Between the horses running, the blind waving in the wind, Jennie talking and me telling her to be quiet, I'm surprised that we had any deer come in at all!

But low and behold, here they come...

In just about 10 minutes, we had 15 deer feeding right outside our blind!

Didn't take long for the bucks to start coming in.

We've the little wide buck....

And Fork.....

And Bubba, ain't he somethin'?

Here comes something worth taking a picture of, Ol' Spotty.

Spotty has spots(Couldn't tell by his name, could ya?) Spotty has LOTS and LOTS of spots..

See?!

And Spotty sure does like his corn, just look at that belly!

Mama Doe and her Baby

While we were riding around this evening, we saw this young doe with her baby. The baby still had a few spots left! I think this doe is one that comes in to feed by our house in the evening, so she was probably on her way down here when we came across her. And since she was only about 1 mile away, it wouldn't be a very long walk! I think that the baby was more concerned with the buffalo that were across the road than it was with us! Here's some pictures that I took, wasn't it nice of her to stop and pose? ;~)

Horses in the Morning Fog

Just took these about 15 minutes ago. It has been really cool and foggy this morning! Makes me want to go deer hunting!!! ;)

First picture is of all 3 horses and our donkey......

Now, this is Boogie, she's not a bit camera shy!!!!

But Hippie Chick ain't to camera shy her ownself!!

And then we got the donkey, Beauregard, he just wants something to eat!

And good ol' Mick is waiting at the door for me....

To srcatch his belly!

Blazer isn't to worried about getting his belly scratched this morning.......

Spotted Buck

This is one of the bucks that come in to feed on the deer corn that we put out every night.

We've been feeding the deer for 4 years. We feed them Cattle Cake and deer corn.

This buck has came in for the last 2 years and has always had these spots on his face, but this year he has them all over his body. So, he goes by the names of Spot, Spotted buck and the Itchy buck. Here is a picture that I took last year while he was still in velvet......

And this was last fall when he was coming in to feed (I was standing at the gate about 15 feet from him!)

And this is our reward for feeding the deer, this is the same buck from the pictures above, just 1 year older! He looked very sickly last year, but this year looks like he doin' just fine!!

Also, if you like deer hunting, I might be posting a few pictures of that kind of stuff, to ;)

One more thing----we do not hunt the deer that we feed, they're more like our pets!

This is my very goofy dog, Blazer. He loves to get up on the trampoline with my little sister.

He gets up there, goes right to the middle, flops down on his back and starts "talking" to her

If I get on the trampoline, he thinks that he has to lay with his head against my knee!;)

Big Bluestem Sunset

Took these pictures this evening while on the way home. The big bluestem is starting to get BIG! Just like the old saying, it gets as tall as a man on horseback. I'm gonna have to go find me a big one and measure it to see how tall a man is on horseback ;) Last year I found one that was 8 1/2 feet tall, so we'll see how the bluestem grew this year! Another name for it is Turkey Track (when it seeds out the tops look like a turkey track)that was what my great-grandpa used to call it(not the great-grandpa in the old picture).

A Little Piece of Osage Co. History

This is the old Chapman & Barnard Ranch bunkhouse that was built in the early 1920's.

Maybe this was what it looked like back in the '20's, though they probably had barb-wire fence
instead of pipe.
How 'bout that big ol' porch? Lets have a closer look. The old bell stands ready to greet you be the gate.

But it could be used to call in the cowboys for dinner, from the barn that set's to the east of the Bunkhouse.

Here's a look at the cowboys who used to work here (and yes this is the Real Deal, no Paint Shop used!!)

See this Ol' Cowboy? Know who he is? That's my Great, Great Grandad, Ben Johnson Sr.! He used to work here and was the Ranch Foreman.

So there's your Osage Co. history lesson for today

Riding around with a new Canon

Got this in today ....

So, we went riding around this evening

looking for something to take a picture of.

We stopped down on the creek and I took this picture of a Blue-Fronted Dancer.

On the way back to the house we saw this herd of buffalo

coming up out of the creek bottoms,

to spend the night on the prairie.

And to finish this day off, a beautiful Oklahoma sunset.

The night the Devil Ninja Red Wasp Chased Mama

This was our "Trill of the Day" for last Sunday.

Okay, so we got this HUGE red wasp nest

above our front door.

And let me tell ya these are the old dark red wasps, the ones that will chase ya around the house.

So, the other evening Mama was trying to kill these wasps so she could knock the nest down. After going through one can of Raid wasp spray, she came back into the house to get another.

When she walked out the back door, she saw this coming at her ( but he was flying :-)

I could hear her hollering and cussin',
but I didn't know what about.

Trust me, you don't want to know what she really called this wasp.

Lets just say it wasn't very nice!

She finally knocked him down
but she said he was still crawling across the carport trying to get her!
Like Dad always tells us
"I hope nuthin bad ever gets
a hole of ya"

And yes she did kill the Red wasps on the nest, knocked the nest down and killed the Devil wasp!

Victory!!!!!!!

We think it might be a Spider Wasp

or maybe some kind of burrowing wasp since it didn't come off of the

Red wasp nest above the door.

Ya know what I think it is?

It's a gen-u-ine Devil Ninja Red Wasp!

Oh, the glory of living in the country!

Buffalo Herd on the move

I took these pictures today on the way home from town. The Buffalo seemed to be ether running from something or just trying to get to the creek bottoms before night. They were moving from west to east at a high rate of speed!!

Fire Across the Tallgrass Prairie

I took these pictures today of a Controlled Burn.

This is my dad's fire truck(Military 5 ton).

There are 3 fire trucks, along with 2 guys on 4 wheelers(A.T.V.s) who light the fire.

All of the trucks have a water nozzle on the front grill guard that is ran by a switch inside the cab.

Gone Fishin'

Me and Dad went fishing last Saturday and we saw all kinds of prairie wildlife.

While on our way to the pond we saw a Bob-White Quail setting on the fence. He was just singing his little heart out!

Can you spot the Buffalo in this one?

When we went to the next pond, I spotted some Wild Burgamot blooming along the pond dam.

After we got done at this pond, we went back to Wild Hog Creek. Didn't catch anything but I did get a picture of a Mountain Boomer (or Collard Lizard).

Had to take the pic. from across the creek, though.

At the last pond we went to, I snapped this picture of a Widow Skimmer dragonfly posing on a little tree, just for me!
